Nigeria: Boko Haram - Army Arrests 33 Suspects in Kaduna

Armed soldiers believed to be men of the 1 Mechanized Division, Nigerian Army, have stormed the popular Barnawa Shopping Complex area of Kaduna metropolis and whisked away 33 persons suspected to be Boko Haram members. Thirteen of those seized were Nigeriens, including a newspaper vendor and a suya seller.
The soldiers, according to an eye witness account, arrived at the area around 9pm in a convoy of army vehicles, fully armed, and bundled suspected members of the sect into their vehicles.

Nigerian Senators to FG: How to avoid coup

Senator yesterday told the federal Government of Nigeria to provide good Governance and strengthen the electoral system in order to avoid a military coup like the one executed in Mali. Malian soldiers mutinied on Sunday and toppled president Amadou Toumani Toure, alleging failure of the government to adequately equip them to tackle the Touareg insurgency in the northern part of the country.
Yesterday, the Senate debated a motion on the Malian coup, sponsored by Senate leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP, Cross River), and urged the mutineers to restore power to the democratically elected Toure.

Boko Haram sect reportedly kill father of arrested spokesman

Father of alleged Boko Haram spokesman, Abu Qaqa, was reportedly killed in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, by suspected sect members.

The purported sect’s spokesman, who was arrested in February by the State Security Service in Kaduna, has remained in SSS custody.

The Boko Haram sect has repeatedly denied that the man in custody is the sect’s spokesman; however, security officials insist they have the right man in custody.

Qaqa’s father, said to be a retired prison warder, was murdered alongside a former colleague on Monday evening as they prepared for prayers in Maiduguri, heartland of the sect.

A security official, speaking on the basis of anonymity as he was not authorised to release information, confirmed to the Associated Press that one of the murdered victims was infact the father of the suspected Boko Haram spokesman.

Nigeria holds 5 with ‘Qaeda links’ over German kidnap

Nigerian authorities have detained five men, including a Mauritanian, believed linked to Al-Qaeda’s north African branch over the January kidnapping of a German, two security sources said Tuesday.

Four of the suspects were arrested in a raid on a store in the northern city of Kano owned by the Mauritanian last week, while the fifth was held in a separate raid, the sources said.

Nigeria: Court jails 3 policemen for rape

Three policemen have been sentenced to various jail terms on a three-count charge of  abduction, conspiracy and rape of a 16-year-old girl.
The three, who stood before a Kano State High Court in Kano on Monday, were said to have committed the act in 2011.
In her judgement, Justice Tani Yusuf sentenced former Insp. Dantalle Muhammed, who was convicted on three counts, to 10 years imprisonment for rape; eight years for abduction and six years for conspiracy.
In addition to the prison terms, the court ordered fined Muhammed N50,000 each for conspiracy and abduction, and N100,000 for rape.
The second convict, former Insp. Yusuf Ibrahim, was sentenced to 14 years with a fine of N200,000 for abduction, eight years and a fine of N100,000 for conspiracy and six years with a fine of N50,000 for rape.
The third convict, Mahmuda Muhammad, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for rape.

The Special Fraud Unit, SFU, of the Nigerian Police has arrested Olaide Omotola for allegedly defrauding the company handling Tejuosho Market Redevelopment, Stormberg Engineering Company Ltd., of over N2 billion.
Omotola’s arrest followed to a petition sent to the Inspector General of Police by the Chairman and Managing Director of Stormberg Engineering, Mr. Dolapo Atinmo, alleging fraud he perpetrated while acting as Interim Coordinator for oversight function at the project site for the company.
The matter was subsequently referred to the SFU by the IG for further investigation.
In his statement to the SFU, Atinmo claimed that immediately after winning the contract for the redeveloping of Tejuosho Market, he travelled abroad to attend to his failing health and handed over the oversight function to Omotola.

Late DIG Haruna’s Mum Dies of Shock



11 days after a Deputy Inspector-General of Police [DIG], Haruna died in a helicopter crash in Jos, his mother, Mrs. Silany John died yesterday of shock after she was told about her son’s death.Haruna died 12 days after he was promoted to the position of acting Inspector-General (IG).

Already, the relatives have fixed Saturday, March 31, for his burial but his mother died Saturday morning, March 24. She was 82years old.

Fear Of Boko Haram Attack - Lagos State Demolished 5 Mosque


The Lagos State Government last week demolished five mosques located within the State secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, following an order by Governor Fashola, banning all religious activities within the secretariat.


The demolition of the mosques was carried out by the government after getting intelligence reports from SSS that the secretariat was vulnerable to attack by Boko Haram as long as the mosques remain within the secretariat.

Shots Fired at U.S. Embassy in Abuja Nigeria

Nigerian police detained two suspects after two shots were fired today in the vicinity of the U.S. embassy in the capital, Abuja.
“We refer you to the Nigerian police for further information,” Deborah MacLean, a spokeswoman for the embassy, said in an e-mailed statement, without giving more information. A spokesman for the police in Abuja, Moshood Jimoh, said by phone he was unaware of the incident.
Abuja and the mainly Muslim north have seen a surge in violence that has left more than 1,000 people dead since 2009. Authorities in Africa’s top oil producer blame Boko Haram, which draws inspiration from Afghanistan’s Taliban movement, for the unrest.
Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is a sin,” claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 suicide-bombing of the United Nations building in the capital that left 24 dead and for the bombing of a church near Abuja on Christmas Day that killed 43 people.
Abul Qaqa, the purported spokesman for the group, said on March 20 it is ruling out future talks with President Goodluck Jonathan’s government, and called on all Muslims in Nigeria “to join us in our struggle to Islamize Nigeria.”

Nigeria had a general Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized across the nation today. The examinations are being conducted for university admissions, however, it is not clear how the question papers reportedly sneaked out from invigilators hours before the approved start time for the exams. Nigerian test bodies are notorious for a culture of aiding and abetting examination malpractices, the scourge grows every exam period in Nigeria.

 UTME candidates were sighted earlier in the morning before examination commenced, downloading some alphabets supposedly believed to be answers from sources they claim are authoritative' in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination organizing body. Some of them said they already had the questions leaked since the eve of the exam.
